“You don’t write songs to please people—you write them because you have to.”

synopsis

In the early 1960s, a young Bob Dylan arrives in New York City with little more than a guitar and a mysterious past. As he immerses himself in the Greenwich Village folk scene, his talent and restless creativity quickly propel him to prominence. But Dylan’s refusal to conform—and his controversial decision to electrify his sound—creates tension within the folk community and transforms the course of popular music.

mini-review

A Complete Unknown captures the volatile moment when Bob Dylan reshaped modern music. Rather than presenting a traditional cradle-to-grave biography, the film focuses on the early years that defined his legend. Timothée Chalamet’s performance channels Dylan’s elusive personality, while the film recreates the vibrant and sometimes contentious world of the 1960s folk movement.

A rainy evening, good speakers, and a playlist of 1960s folk music to keep the mood going afterward.

Absurdist's Corner

Few artists have managed to frustrate critics, fans, and interviewers so consistently while still becoming one of the most influential musicians in history.

fun facts

• Timothée Chalamet performed many of the songs himself in the film.
• The story centers heavily on Dylan’s controversial electric performance at the Newport Folk Festival.
• Director James Mangold previously directed another acclaimed music biopic, Walk the Line.
