Directed by Vincente Minnelli, this is pure MGM dream factory. The 17-minute ballet finale is one of the most ambitious sequences ever attempted in a Hollywood musical. Story is feather-light — but the color, choreography, and sheer exuberance carry it.

An unemployed American painter in postwar Paris somehow has the time, stamina, and funding to stage a 17-minute, fully orchestrated ballet fantasy inside his own romantic disappointment. Reality politely steps aside so Gershwin can take over. Also mildly absurd: that romantic misunderstandings can be resolved through Impressionist-inspired dream choreography rather than actual conversation.
