“There’s someone out there for everyone.”

synopsis

Michael Stone, a motivational speaker traveling for a conference, suffers from a strange psychological condition in which everyone he encounters appears identical in voice and personality. While staying in a Cincinnati hotel, he meets a shy woman named Lisa whose voice sounds uniquely different to him. Their brief connection offers the possibility of genuine human intimacy—though Michael’s own emotional limitations threaten to undermine it.

mini-review

Written by Charlie Kaufman and co-directed with Duke Johnson, Anomalisa uses delicate stop-motion animation to explore loneliness, depression, and the difficulty of authentic connection. Despite featuring puppet characters, the film is profoundly adult in tone and theme. Quiet, melancholy, and deeply introspective, it demonstrates how animation can capture subtle emotional truths that live-action sometimes struggles to convey.

A quiet late-night viewing, dim lighting, and the patience for a slow, introspective story about loneliness and human connection.

Absurdist's Corner

Michael’s entire existential crisis unfolds during a perfectly ordinary business trip to Cincinnati, proving that midlife despair can strike literally anywhere.
