“I won’t be a rock star. I will be a legend.”

synopsis

This glossy biopic chronicles the rise of Freddie Mercury and the formation of the band Queen. The film follows Mercury’s journey from outsider immigrant Farrokh Bulsara to flamboyant rock icon, charting creative breakthroughs, internal band tensions, personal struggles, and culminating in the legendary Live Aid performance. It frames Mercury as both misunderstood misfit and larger-than-life showman.

mini-review

Rami Malek’s Oscar-winning performance is committed and charismatic, capturing Mercury’s stage presence if not every nuance of his private life. The film plays fast and loose with historical timelines, smoothing rough edges and simplifying conflicts. Still, the Live Aid sequence is electrifying — nearly worth the price of admission alone. It’s more celebration than investigation, but sometimes celebration is enough.

Friday night volume up. Watch with friends who will sing. Bonus points if someone insists on attempting the Galileo section.

Absurdist's Corner

A six-minute operatic rock anthem about existential dread becomes one of the most played stadium sing-alongs in history.

fun facts

  • The Live Aid scene was meticulously recreated shot-for-shot.

  • The film underwent a director change mid-production.

  • Some critics argued the movie sanitized aspects of Mercury’s life.
