“Every day we brush past so many people.”

synopsis

In bustling Hong Kong, two lonely police officers struggle with heartbreak in separate but loosely connected stories. One becomes obsessed with canned pineapples that symbolize the expiration date of his relationship, while the other forms a quiet bond with a mysterious snack-bar worker who secretly rearranges his apartment while he’s away. Their lives drift through neon-lit streets, fast-food counters, and late-night conversations as they search for connection in a city that never slows down.

mini-review

Director Wong Kar-wai crafts a hypnotic portrait of urban loneliness and fleeting romance. With dreamy cinematography, unconventional storytelling, and a memorable pop soundtrack, Chungking Express captures the restless energy of Hong Kong in the 1990s. The film is less about plot than about mood—an atmospheric meditation on timing, missed opportunities, and the strange ways people drift into and out of each other’s lives.

A late-night viewing, dim lights, and something reflective—maybe a drink and the feeling of wandering through a city after midnight.

Absurdist's Corner

The snack-bar worker repeatedly breaks into the policeman’s apartment to redecorate, and he somehow never suspects a thing.
