mini-review
Unlike many musical biopics, De-Lovely doesn’t try to imitate the flashy spectacle of Broadway productions. Instead it takes a more reflective approach, framing Porter’s life as a kind of theatrical memory play. Kevin Kline captures Porter’s wit, charm, and vulnerability, while Ashley Judd brings surprising depth to Linda Porter, portraying a woman whose loyalty and strength anchor the story. The film’s unusual narrative device may not work for everyone, but the music and performances make it a rewarding portrait of one of America’s greatest songwriters.
A martini or Manhattan and a late evening appreciation of classic American songwriting.
Absurdist's Corner
The entire story unfolds as if Porter is watching his own life staged as a theatrical revue from the afterlife—complete with a mysterious guide introducing each episode like a master of ceremonies. It’s a clever idea… though not everyone finds it necessary.
