“A prince is not a thing to be won.”

synopsis

Ella of Frell is cursed at birth with the “gift” of obedience — she must follow any direct command given to her. As she grows, the curse becomes a dangerous liability, especially under the thumb of a cruel stepfamily. Determined to break the spell, Ella ventures through a whimsical kingdom filled with ogres, giants, elves, and political intrigue. Along the way, she forms an unexpected connection with Prince Charmont and begins to discover her own agency.

mini-review

This is fairy tale by way of early-2000s rom-com energy. It’s playful, self-aware, and leans into its modern tone rather than pretending to be classical fantasy. Anne Hathaway carries the film with charm and a wink that keeps it buoyant. It’s lighter and less mythic than something like Stardust, but that’s part of its appeal. It knows it’s a confection. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you want — a fairy tale that feels like it’s smiling at you.

A lighthearted night when you want romance without emotional heaviness — bonus points if someone in the room sings along unironically.

Absurdist's Corner

The kingdom apparently functions normally despite citizens being able to command Ella to do anything at any time… which seems like a catastrophic legal loophole.

fun facts
