“You’re not special. You’re just desperate.”

synopsis

Emily Benetto is drowning in student debt and locked out of decent employment because of a minor criminal record. Desperate for money, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying expensive items with stolen credit cards. What begins as a quick cash grab pulls her deeper into Los Angeles’s underground fraud network, where the risks escalate quickly and survival demands sharper instincts than she ever expected.

mini-review

This is a lean, modern crime drama that feels uncomfortably plausible. Aubrey Plaza delivers a terrific performance as a woman who isn’t a hardened criminal so much as someone pushed into the gray areas of survival. The film’s tension comes less from violence and more from the creeping realization that Emily may actually be good at this life. It’s a quiet but gripping look at economic desperation and moral compromise.

A late-night watch with a stiff drink and the uncomfortable realization that half the film’s frustrations about modern work culture feel painfully accurate.

Absurdist's Corner

For someone new to crime, Emily adapts to fraud operations at a speed that would impress the Mafia. Apparently a few tutorials and a burner phone are all you need to enter the world of organized credit-card crime.
