mini-review

Minimalist and atmospheric, Halloween is less about gore and more about presence. Carpenter’s synth score does half the work, turning quiet suburban streets into stages of dread. The film moves deliberately, allowing tension to simmer rather than explode. While the plot is simple and the characterization spare, the restraint is part of its power. It may not transcend the slasher structure entirely, but it refines it to near perfection.

October viewing. Ideal with lights low and volume up for the score.

Absurdist's Corner

A masked figure wanders slowly through quiet suburbs for hours, and no one notices. Suburban vigilance: impressive in theory.
