Based on the Saturday Night Live sketch, this thing should not work. It’s crude, repetitive, and gleefully stupid. And yet… it commits so completely that it becomes its own twisted masterpiece.
Will Forte plays MacGruber with Shakespearean intensity, which makes every failure funnier. Kristen Wiig brings unexpected sweetness. Val Kilmer goes full theatrical villain and somehow elevates the material.
It bombed theatrically. It found its audience later. That audience quotes it obsessively.
It’s vulgar. It’s juvenile. It’s also oddly precise in how it dismantles the hyper-masculine action genre.
Watching with friends who appreciate reckless comedy.
