mini-review

This is social anxiety weaponized. The comedy works because it taps into a universal fear: being evaluated by someone who holds all the power. De Niro’s restrained intensity is what elevates it — he plays it straight, which makes Stiller’s escalating disasters feel real rather than cartoonish. It’s cringe-heavy, yes, but sharply constructed. The family chaos here isn’t loud; it’s suffocating.

That feeling when you’re about to attend a dinner where you really need to make a good impression.

Absurdist's Corner

A retired CIA agent with a basement polygraph… and somehow nobody runs.
