mini-review
Directed by Brian De Palma, the first entry is less bombast and more paranoia thriller. The famous wire-drop scene is suspense filmmaking in pure form—minimal dialogue, maximum tension. Later entries leaned into spectacle, but this one thrives on misdirection and atmosphere. It’s sleek, slightly twisty, and confident in letting silence do the work.
Late-night viewing. A dark room. The satisfaction of watching a plan executed with surgical precision.
Absurdist's Corner
The IMF’s security can be defeated with gum, a fish tank, and impeccable timing. Also, apparently every global spy network stores its most sensitive list on one floppy disk.
fun facts
The CIA vault scene required intense physical control; Tom Cruise reportedly held his breath to avoid triggering sound sensors.
The train finale used early CGI to augment practical effects.
The franchise would later become synonymous with Cruise performing his own stunts.
