“What if my problem wasn’t that I don’t understand people… but that I don’t like them?”

synopsis

Louis Bloom is a small-time thief in Los Angeles who stumbles into the world of freelance crime journalism — filming grisly accidents and violent crimes to sell to local news stations. Armed with a police scanner and relentless ambition, Lou reinvents himself as a “nightcrawler,” chasing tragedy for profit. As he climbs the ladder, he begins crossing increasingly dangerous ethical lines — and then erasing them altogether.

The film tracks his ascent in the neon glow of Los Angeles nights, where morality flickers as faintly as police lights in the distance.

mini-review

This one gets under your skin.

Gyllenhaal delivers one of the most unnerving performances of the decade — lean, wide-eyed, smiling just a beat too long. Lou Bloom isn’t explosive; he’s vacant and calculating. He speaks in corporate self-help jargon while exploiting human suffering. It’s chilling because it feels plausible.

The film is also a savage satire of media sensationalism. Rene Russo’s news director character knows exactly what she’s buying — fear packaged for ratings. The movie doesn’t shout its critique; it just shows you the transaction.

The final act is ruthless. There’s no moral reckoning, no grand speech. Just ambition rewarded.

That’s what makes it linger.

A late-night viewing when the house is quiet and you’re slightly tired — it enhances the eerie, insomniac vibe. No comfort food. Maybe just black coffee.

Absurdist's Corner

Lou commits increasingly blatant crimes on camera in a media ecosystem obsessed with footage… and somehow always stays one step ahead. Terrifying? Yes. Convenient? Also yes.
