“A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain…”
synopsis
In fascist Spain in 1944, a young girl named Ofelia moves with her pregnant mother to the rural outpost of her cruel stepfather, Captain Vidal, a brutal officer hunting anti-Franco rebels. Lonely and frightened, Ofelia discovers an ancient labyrinth near the mill where they live. There she meets a mysterious faun who tells her she may be the long-lost princess of an underground kingdom. To reclaim her throne, she must complete three dangerous tasks. As Ofelia navigates a world of eerie creatures and magical trials, the boundaries between fantasy and the terrifying reality of war begin to blur.

mini-review
Director Guillermo del Toro creates one of the most visually arresting fantasy films ever made, blending dark fairy-tale imagery with the grim realities of post-civil-war Spain. The creature design is unforgettable, especially the Pale Man, and the film refuses to soften the brutality of the world it portrays. What makes the movie remarkable is how the fantasy elements never feel like escapism—they deepen the emotional stakes of the story. The result is a haunting, adult fairy tale that lingers long after the credits.
A stormy evening, a glass of red wine, and the quiet mood of a dark fairy tale meant for grown-ups.
Absurdist's Corner
In a film full of monsters, magical chalk doors, and giant toads living inside trees, the most frightening creature remains Captain Vidal—a human being with no need for magic to be monstrous.
