“If you hang up, you’ll die.”

synopsis

In a quiet Colorado suburb during the late 1970s, a shy teenage boy named Finney is abducted by a masked serial killer known as “The Grabber.” Locked in a soundproof basement with a disconnected black telephone mounted on the wall, Finney soon discovers the phone isn’t as dead as it seems. One by one, the voices of the killer’s previous victims begin calling from beyond the grave, offering clues that may help him escape before he becomes the next victim.

mini-review

The Black Phone blends supernatural horror with a tense kidnapping thriller. Rather than relying solely on shocks, the film builds suspense through the growing relationship between Finney and the ghostly voices trying to guide him. Ethan Hawke’s chilling performance as the masked kidnapper adds a constant sense of danger, while the film’s emotional core focuses on courage and survival.

Late-night viewing and viewers who enjoy suspenseful horror with a supernatural twist.

Absurdist's Corner

After finally escaping the basement and discovering his kidnapper asleep upstairs, Finney quietly tiptoes past him and tries to solve the combination lock on the door—rather than grabbing the nearest frying pan and ending the problem immediately. Apparently survival plans sometimes depend on extraordinary restraint.

fun facts

• The film is based on a short story by Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King.
• Ethan Hawke originally hesitated to take the role because he rarely plays villains.
