mini-review

Directed by Peter Jackson and based on the novel by Alice Sebold, this unusual drama blends crime story, family tragedy, and supernatural fantasy. The film’s visual depiction of the afterlife is imaginative and sometimes striking, though the tonal shifts between grief and fantasy can feel uneven. Still, strong performances—particularly from Saoirse Ronan and Stanley Tucci—give the story emotional weight.

A reflective evening, maybe a quiet glass of wine, and the mood for a story about grief, memory, and the lingering ties between the living and the departed.

Absurdist's Corner

In a story full of grief and supernatural observation, the most frustrating part is how close the family comes to solving the mystery multiple times—only to miss it by inches.
