“I’m not Santa… I just look like him.”

synopsis

Divorced dad Scott Calvin accidentally causes Santa Claus to fall from his roof on Christmas Eve. After putting on the red suit to finish Santa’s deliveries, Scott soon discovers he has unknowingly triggered a magical contract—the Santa Clause—which means he must now permanently become the new Santa. As the months pass, Scott gains weight, grows a white beard he can’t shave, and slowly realizes that the job might actually belong to him.

mini-review

Tim Allen’s sarcastic delivery anchors this clever holiday comedy. The movie takes a funny, almost bureaucratic approach to the Santa myth—complete with elves who treat Christmas like a well-organized corporation. It’s light, warm, and surprisingly inventive in the way it explains Santa’s existence.

Milk and cookies (naturally) and the quiet satisfaction of watching someone slowly realize they’ve accepted a very strange new job.

Absurdist's Corner

Scott becomes Santa because he put on a coat and accidentally read a business contract printed on a card. Apparently the North Pole runs on extremely questionable employment law.

fun facts

  • Tim Allen was already a huge star thanks to Home Improvement, which helped make the film a big box-office hit.

  • The idea of Santa being replaced through a legal “clause” was the key comedic hook that sold the script.

  • The movie spawned two sequels and became a long-running holiday franchise.
