"You are the caretaker. You have always been the caretaker."
synopsis
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and based loosely on the novel by Stephen King, The Shining follows writer Jack Torrance as he accepts a winter caretaker job at the isolated Overlook Hotel. Accompanied by his wife Wendy and son Danny, Jack’s fragile psyche begins to fracture under the hotel’s influence — or perhaps his own buried rage.

mini-review
Kubrick’s film is less a haunted-house story and more a study in psychological disintegration. The Overlook Hotel becomes a labyrinth of symmetry and dread, with long tracking shots that amplify isolation. Jack Nicholson’s performance is iconic — operatic, unhinged, sometimes deliberately theatrical. The horror unfolds through atmosphere rather than shocks, culminating in images that have embedded themselves permanently in pop culture. It is cold, controlled, and deeply unsettling.
A winter night. Snow outside if possible. Silence in the house.
Absurdist's Corner
