"I know I'm human."

synopsis

Directed by John Carpenter, The Thing follows a group of American researchers stationed in Antarctica who encounter a parasitic alien lifeform capable of perfectly imitating any organism it infects. As suspicion spreads and trust collapses, the men struggle to determine who is human — and who is not.

mini-review

This is paranoia distilled. Carpenter blends isolation, distrust, and grotesque transformation into one of horror’s most tightly controlled pressure cookers. The practical effects — designed by Rob Bottin — remain astonishing and unsettling. But the real strength lies in the psychological breakdown. The alien is terrifying, yes, but the fear of one another is worse. The ambiguous ending only deepens the unease. It’s cold, brutal, and thematically airtight.

A winter night. Extra points if it’s snowing outside.

Absurdist's Corner

In a place where cooperation is essential for survival, suspicion becomes the primary survival strategy. Community collapses faster than the ice.
