“Maybe the world outside forgot how to live like this.”

synopsis

During the Korean War, soldiers from both North and South Korea—along with an American pilot—stumble upon a remote mountain village called Dongmakgol. The villagers are blissfully unaware that a war is even happening. Forced to coexist in this peaceful, naïve community, the enemy soldiers gradually lower their weapons and begin to see each other not as enemies but as fellow human beings. But as outside forces move closer to the village, their fragile harmony is threatened.

mini-review

Welcome to Dongmakgol is a rare war film that blends comedy, fantasy, and heartfelt drama. The film begins almost like a fairy tale: a secluded village where innocence still survives despite the violence surrounding it. Watching hardened soldiers slowly soften in this strange environment is both funny and deeply moving. By the end, the story becomes surprisingly emotional, delivering a powerful message about the absurdity of war and the simple humanity shared by people on both sides.

Comfort food, a quiet evening, and a willingness to watch a war story that believes kindness might actually be stronger than violence.

Absurdist's Corner

A major artillery explosion in the village accidentally turns a storehouse full of corn into a massive blizzard of popcorn, which floats gently through the air as the soldiers stare in disbelief. It’s one of the strangest—and most beautiful—war movie moments ever filmed.
